Combining elements of both a fully glazed conservatory and a solid roof extension, our energy efficient selection of orangeries are both functional and elegant, offering natural light and the solidity of an extension. Features such as insulated internal pelmets are popular elements of the orangeries installed by Inspired Windows & Conservatories, giving homeowners the benefit of a cosy, extension-like feel with the brightness of an elegant, glazed roof.
If you favour a more traditional style, our team can install design features such as a bespoke roof lantern as an elegant addition to your conservatory roof or orangery. This ornate focal point is the perfect finishing touch for a period style of home extension.
Combining the durability of a tiled conservatory roof and the brightness of glass roof panels, the Livin Roof seamlessly combines the two materials to create a flexible design to complement every home.
At Inspired Windows & Conservatories, we value the importance of natural light in any home extension and craft bespoke designs which bring out the best features of your space. Installing a Livein Roof as part of a new build, replacement solid roof or rebuilding your current conservatory creates the ultimate multi-functional space, incorporating one or several glazed panels, instantly making the space brighter.
Loggia is a modern building system which makes building orangeries affordable. Combining the best of British manufacturing with inspiration from elegant Italian design, Loggia is a unique building concept which creates beautiful extensions with revolutionary engineering.
Traditional orangeries became popular from the 17th century to the 19th century, in northern European homes where citrus trees and exotic plants including orange trees were grown. These structures, built using brick or stone bases, solid brick pillars and tall, sometimes floor-to-ceiling windows, were designed to maximise sunlight exposure for the precious fruits. These south-facing glazed windows were contrasted with solid walling in the north side of the structure, increasing the building’s sturdiness and grand appearance.
With today’s high performance glass technology and thermally efficient orangery roof options, modern orangeries often reflect the design of a single-storey extension with a glazed roof.
What is the Difference between a Conservatory and an Orangery?
The features of a contemporary orangery are frequently compared to the structure of a glazed conservatory, with both builds often mistaken for the other. In truth, the advancements in insulation technology in both glazed and solid panels mean that elements of the orangery are typically interchangeable with those of a conservatory.
As a rule of thumb, an orangery is an extension with a glass roof which typically covers less than 75% of the overall roof area, with glazed walls covering less than 50% of the total wall area. In contrast, a conservatory typically features a glass roof which covers at least 75% of the total roof area, with glass walls which also covers at least 50% of the overall wall area. In short, conservatories have a higher proportion of glazing than orangeries.
Contemporary orangeries can be compared to flat roofed garden room-style extensions, solid roof conservatories with glazed roof panels, or hybrid roof conservatories. Whether you choose a traditional or more modern style, this versatile extension is the perfect way to introduce open plan living into your home.
Orangery extensions fall under the same permitted development and building regulations as a conservatory, if a specific set of conditions are met. These conditions include if the orangery will not exceed 50% of the total area of the land around the original existing house.
